"I love the desktop effect feature, it has been done so many times, but the one here is the best i have found. You can tell it how much cpu to dedicate (low, medium low, medium, medium high, high) If you set it on low, it still plays the background great, plus the rest of the computer still runs smooth. "Excellent little application. If you like to personalize your computer, then you'll love this program. It looks great in your system preferences, so you don't have to open yet another application. The features range from putting screensavers on your desktop to changing the login screen to other fun things (and you can make the finder icon with the hat your actual finder icon - looks nice). While some of these features may be found elsewhere, I haven't seen any other programs that let you do so much with them so easily, especially not for the price! Definitely try it out for yourself."

Customize Your OS X Mac: Change Boot Images, Login Panel, Dock Backgrounds, Startup Strings With Ease

"Visage, a 1.2 megabyte download from Sanity Software, is a must-have for any Mac customization freak. And there are many of us out there.
Visage gives you a front end to things you can change using Terminal.app if you don't mind getting yourself elbow-deep in the shell. Changing these things once or twice through the shell method isn't bad if you don't lose the instructions, but when you like to change them frequently it gets to be a real headache?and Visage is like ibuprofen.
Bored of the plain old Mac OS X boot panel? Replace it! How about that stale login panel? Axe it as well! Replace your Dock poof with something more serious looking (or even more whimsical), and mess with the background pattern of your Dock?do you like it striped, straight translucent, or 100% clear with a border? It's up to you. The latter is my personal favorite aspect of Visage?it lets me kill the stripes on the Dock, making it infinitely easier on the eyes.
To supplement the samples that Visage comes with, you can download files from ResExcellence or any other site offering them, or you can make your own. Visage lets you create libraries of these files so that you can keep them organized and change them ever so much more easily. Visage's interface is very clean and easy to use, and the preview function lets you see what your changes will look like without having to log out or restart.
Moreover, I have noticed no instability or other issues caused by Visage, which alas is not true of all hacks.

Never knew you could take screenshots while logging in, did you? Well, neither did I! This is an example of what you can do to your login panel using Visage, with the images it comes with.
Visage is nagware, and the author requests you fork over $10 to make the nagging stop. A reasonable price for those who find it useful."

Sanity Software released Visage, a System Control Panel Pane that allows you to change many aspects of MacOS X without logging in as Root or moving files with terminal commands. For Login Screen Backgrounds, it will even change the background randomly everytime you log in. For a $10 shareware fee, this little app is a deal."
